A Fruitful Friday

Despite threats of thunderstorms all day and overcast skies, we didn't have enough rain to keep us inside all day. We spent a lot of time preparing for our Saturday work day. It can be a challenge to keep everything running smoothly with 50+ volunteers working on the same project. I think we've figured out how to streamline the process and Janice and Jenny did a great job organizing everything this morning. The first image is of 'Goldheart' bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) that is just starting to bloom. I love this bright gold foliage that will persist thru the summer. I took many pictures today as I went thru the gardens marking other perennials for digging and future dividing. Terry dug up clumps as I marked them. We should have over 5,000 perennial divisions by the end of tomorrow and still have one more "evening of division" next Wednesday. I hope this is a successful sale.

Some hostas are still barely poking out of the ground with their leaves wound tight into points, emerging out of the soil. Other hostas, like this 'Remember Me' have already emerged and are showing off their fresh new leaves at maximum brilliance. Hostas are so durable and I don't think they should ever be considered ubiquitous. There are so many colors and textures to choose from now. Another warm spell should flush out the rest of our trees and shrubs and the peak of planting season will arrive.
