The Sale Has Begun

Our spring plant sale started today in a rush, which is pretty typical. Despite the 9 am advertised start time, we had some early arrivals that we had to hold back a bit. Marv, Terry, Marianne, Janice and I all got the sale prepared just in time for the onslaught (which is good!). We have had steady traffic all morning and have seen lots of vegetables and herbs go out the door. The daylilies aren't quite as popular but are also moving at a steady pace. The kids above were just a hoot as they went right to the sand patch that we used to level part of the sale area. They made all sorts of castles and had a grand time. Below are some shots during the sale itself. Janice and Marianne did a wonderful job organizing this complex event and it was nice to have many plant sale volunteer "veterans".
Terry and I did the pushmowing today while Marv did some major rototilling. Marv and Terry also worked on placing a large memorial bench and resecured many of our daisy art pieces out in the gardens that have been compromised by recent, hurricane-force winds. Marianne and Janice kept the sale running smoothly although Marianne had time to get her cutting display in order. Dr. Gredler was here mowing and we saw many volunteers here that helped facilitate the sale as a yard helper or cash register attendant.
I've been cataloging my pictures from the Chicago Botanic Garden and thought I'd share some neat ones that really photographed well. Both of these plants are annuals and were started early in the CBG greenhouses, brought out in April and used for spring color until early June (my guess). To the left is the Persian buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus 'Bloomingdale Rose Shades') that looks like a rose bloom to me and was as vivid pink as you can find. These buttercups, in many colors, were all over the gardens and are something that we haven't tried here (yet). To the right is one of the more unique annuals called five spot (Nemophila maculata) that is actually native to California. The blooms are quite unique (see the "five spots" on the petals?) and this plant really peaks in May but would never look this good in mid-summer.
CBG has always done a nice job with cool season annuals and a seamless transition of container displays thru the season. We hope to do a staff trip/tour later this summer to CBG and it will be nice to see the changes and summer transformation. Our peonies are blooming early as seen below but so are the ornamental onions (Allium 'Purple Sensation'). This tandem looks great. More plant sale hours over the weekend but the weather looks to be awesome.
