Two Score and A Couple More

The weather was perfect for our fifth sequential Volunteer Work Day today with lots of help throughout the gardens.  We planted the "Pollinator's Paradise" theme with our All-America Selections (AAS) winners in the Nancy Yahr Memorial Children's Garden this morning. We also had a crew plant over 300 larger tropicals in our Jungle Garden theme as well.  Some assigned gardeners (Sue, Kelley, Marleen, Mirjam and Marcia) were also in to plant their areas and we had help on the vegetable beds at the Horticulture Center.  We had 27 volunteers helping directly with the planting project, 5 assigned gardeners planting this morning, 3 volunteers at the Horticulture Center and also the help from Bill O., Dr. Gredler, Maury and many others.  We actually were able to plant some of the pink theme in front of the Parker Education Center which was our back-up project after the other two planting projects were completed and watered well.  As I type this evening, some nice rains will soak down the gardens and I'll sleep better tonight knowing that Mother Nature has come through for us!  Larry, Janice and Big John were awesome help today as usual and I'm proud of how smooth our team works together when keeping this many volunteers organized, occupied and focused.  We also had members of the WI/IL Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) weeding in the alpine garden (see bottom photo) so our total volunteer count today was well over forty!  We're so thankful for the team effort and will continue to work our gardening "kung fu" over the coming week with daily weeding, planting and another productive Volunteer Work Day on June 14th!
