I had a nice vacation and although it's good to be back in action again. Despite about three months of prep time ahead of me, I already feel behind the proverbial "eight ball" as seed ordering, plant ordering, designs, presentations, etc. will take up all my time over the coming weeks. Nice sho
t above at Olbrich Botanical Gardens (Madison, WI) of their pond with concentric circles of snow. This reminded me of the "dry sea" on our Japanese garden. I did get my horticultural "fix" with a family visit to Olbrich's conservatory and a brisk, arctic tour. They do a great job with their winter containers as seen throughout this blog. Note the silver, spray-painted alliums (to the left) used as ornamentation! Neat. I'm still not convinced that we have the winter traffic that would make winter containers worth the time. Our Holiday Lights Show takes up so much of the late
season. The show is over and was cancelled last night due to cold temperatures and some other factors, however, we had a nice 16 day run and will see how well it turned out as a fundraiser very shortly. It looks like we had just shy of 5,000 attendees and will start taking down the lights a week from today as a private party has paid to have the lights on for their event next Saturday evening. We always shoot for 10,000 attendees to this event and will have to examine our marketing to see why we don't get higher numbers. We had many compliments regarding the show and the weather (on average) wasn't too bad. A special thanks to all volunteers that helped with the set-up and facilitation of this event. Advance thanks to those that will brave frostbite to start taking this event down next week! (I'm too delicate).
We had a nice Grumpy turnout today although only the bravest soul (Urban) went outside to do some pruning. Dave, Jim, Bob A. and Vern were here for carpentry work and we had many Grumpies stop by. We saw Big John, Dr. Gredler, Dr. Yahr, Dick W., Dick H., Maury and Bob T. this morning. The grounds staff must miss work as we had Marv, Marianne, Jerry and Terry all stop by as well. We should have a productive winter but are worried about snow/ice damage from a couple weeks ago and the ravenous deer that are making their tastes apparent!
